Mike DeBaugh Jr., Owner & Principal Consultant, Crimson Business Consulting
Baltimore Native • Maryland's Consultant

Built in Baltimore.
Built for Business.

Attorney. Strategist. Researcher. Community Builder.

Growing up in the Baltimore area, I developed a firsthand appreciation for what it takes to build something that lasts — in business, on the football field, and in the community. That foundation shapes everything I do at Crimson Business Consulting.

I founded CBC with a straightforward mission: to give Maryland's small businesses access to the same caliber of strategic, legal, and operational expertise that larger organizations take for granted. I've spent my career at the intersection of law, strategy, and data-driven decision-making, and I bring that full toolkit to every client engagement.

More Than a Consultant — A Licensed Attorney

As a licensed member of the Maryland State Bar, I bring something most business consultants simply can't: a genuine legal lens on every strategic decision. From contract review and regulatory compliance to entity structuring and intellectual property protection, my legal background ensures that the advice you receive is grounded in what the law actually requires — not just what sounds good on paper.

Maryland's regulatory environment can be complex and fast-moving, especially for emerging businesses. Having an attorney at the strategy table from day one means you spend less time cleaning up costly mistakes and more time growing.

The best time to understand your legal obligations is before you're in a room with someone who already does.

Where Academic Rigor Meets Real-World Strategy

As a doctoral candidate at the University of Maryland, my research sits at a fascinating intersection: I study how the language alignment patterns within a company's top management team predict business outcomes — particularly around major leadership transitions.

In plain terms, I analyze how executives communicate with one another and whether those communication dynamics forecast financial recovery or continued struggle after a CEO departure. The underlying premise is compelling — how a leadership team talks to each other is often a leading indicator of how well they'll navigate adversity together.

This research informs the way I approach client engagements at CBC. I don't just look at your financials or your org chart; I look at how your leadership team functions as a communication unit — because that's where many of the most important business decisions are won or lost.

Language Coordination Among Top Management Teams

Mike's dissertation examines how linguistic alignment within C-suite teams correlates with firm performance recovery following forced CEO departures — applying natural language processing to earnings call transcripts across hundreds of publicly traded companies. The work bridges communication theory, organizational behavior, and empirical finance.

A Team Player, On and Off the Field

Long before boardrooms and briefings, the lessons that shaped me most came on the football field at Indiana University of Pennsylvania, where I earned All-PSAC Football Academic Team honors as a student-athlete. Playing college football teaches things that no classroom can fully replicate: how to prepare relentlessly, how to trust your teammates when it matters most, and how to compete with humility.

Those same principles drive how I show up for clients. Running a consulting engagement isn't so different from running a two-minute drill — you need a clear plan, disciplined execution, and the composure to adapt when things don't go according to script. I've carried that mentality through every career chapter since, and it's woven into the fabric of how CBC operates.

A Baltimore Kid Who Wants to Give Something Back

I grew up in the Baltimore area, and this region has given me everything — a love of sports, a competitive drive, and an understanding of what real community looks like. But I've also watched too many promising small businesses in this region struggle not because of bad ideas or lack of heart, but because they didn't have access to the right guidance at the right time.

That gap is personal to me. CBC exists because I believe that a well-advised small business is one of the most powerful engines of community development there is — it creates jobs, builds wealth, and roots people to the places they call home. Every client we serve is a direct investment in a stronger Maryland.

We're proud members of the Central Maryland Chamber of Commerce, the Anne Arundel County Chamber of Commerce, and the Northern Anne Arundel County Chamber — because showing up in the community isn't just good business, it's the right thing to do.
